The government of India is one the biggest employers of labor in the world. The railways and the telecom ministry employ the largest number of people. The Union government has reserved three percent vacancies for the uniquely-abled individuals, out of which one percent is reserved for people with visual impairment. Another one percent is reserved for those having hearing impairment. The rest is reserved for those with physical drawbacks.
Several organizations, representing mentally challenged people, are trying to secure one percent reservation in central government jobs. The Union government is committed to social justice and extends all the help and support to uniquely-abled individuals. The primary aim of the government is not to make money and it thus allocates resources for employment generation for uniquely-abled individuals.
There are a number of jobs that can be carried out by uniquely-abled persons. They don’t require a high level of literacy. Some jobs need minimum supervision with no risks involved. Unskilled jobs that are performed by a group of persons under supervision and with necessary assistance, can be handed over to uniquely-abled persons. They can be trained to carry out these jobs. Some of such job roles include peon, gardener, messenger, helpers, laborers, waiting/retiring room attendants etc.
According to the rules of employment, literacy up to Class 8 is the minimum requirement for all these jobs. Many experts feel that the criteria are not very realistic and should be relaxed by the government. Several advocacy groups for differently-abled persons have appealed to the government in this regard.
