Adaptive Equipment for Special Needs Children

Adaptive equipment are undeniable necessities for special needs children. Such equipment are designed to help the children succeed in the classroom. The idea is to allow these children enough opportunities like their neuro-typical peers.

The individual education plan (IEP) of a special needs child includes all the equipment required to ensure his/her success. While there are no minimum requirements, every school must assess the needs of its students and give them the necessary equipment.

Here are some common special needs children education aids.

Vision: The range of equipment for visually challenged special needs children include educational aids like Braille, healthcare, information storage, computers, sensors, typing aids, telephones and others.

Hearing: Equipment includes audio amplification, hearing aids, recreational electronics, speech training, signal switches, and sign language.

Communication: The range of communication aids used for a special needs classroom include signal systems, customized input devices, headwands, mouthsticks, and telephones.

Environmental adaptation: The equipment includes products that encourage realization of environmental issues. These include furniture, vertical accessibility, signs, green lighting, and similar things.

Recreation: The range of equipment for recreational activities includes products that are used to entertain special needs children. These are typically music, electronics, crafts, photography, toys and sports goods.

Computers: The need for computers in special needs education can’t be overemphasized. Tabs have proved to be very helpful for special needs children.

While including adaptive equipment, it should be remembered that the all special needs children won’t have common needs. Each child is different. But a special needs classroom must have the proper adaptive equipment so that it’s not left wanting for any particular child.
